ESTREMOZ
The medieval strength gets up on a great hill that dominates the surrounding plain. It was constructed by decision of the king Alfonso III, concerning the year 1260, being finished by his son the mythical Don Dinis, who married Isabel of Aragon. This one for his works and virtues, was canonized and known as Holy Isabel of Portugal. Opposite to the Royal palace, today Inn of Tourism, his white image presides from the hill at the calm city slept in the medievo and the fields of infinite horizons that filled with oaks and vineyards are opened for his back
The surrounding areas of the locality were lived from prehistoric epoch, existiando equally Roman remains, visigodos and Arabic. Fear was taken to the Muslims by Geraldo sen, though it got lost little later on the square having been recovered by forces sent from Badajoz. In the middle of the 13th century, Sancho II of Portugal in an imporatante campaign conquers definitvamente the city, close to a wide territory to the west of the Guadiana.
Estremoz had always protagonism in the transcendental moments of the kingdom of Portugal, in such a way that in several occasions Spanish Parliament met in the city. Kings, princes, nobles and chiefs of the army, resided in his Fort or had here his center of operations. From the 17th century it spread towards the plain, about the monumental square of the Rossio, the church of the Congregated ones and the convent of San Francisco.
