The medieval strength gets up on a great hill that dominates the surrounding plain. It was constructed by decision of the king Alfonso III, concerning the year 1260, being finished by his son the mythical Don Dinis, who married Isabel of Aragon. This one for his works and virtues, was canonized and known as Holy Isabel of Portugal. The surrounding areas of the locality were lived from prehistoric epoch, existiando equally Roman remains, visigodos and Arabic. From the 17th century it spread towards the plain, about the monumental square of the Rossio, the church of the Congregated ones and the convent of San Francisco. |

As all the populations of the border, it had great protagonism in the War of Restoration of Portugal and in that of Succession of Spain, freeing itself along the border fierce battles and repeated invasions being suffered. For all this the medieval strengths were adapting to the new needs of combat. To the old defenses him bastions or bastions were leaned, in agreement with the military technologies of the epoch. In Estremoz numerous armies were quartered in all the epochs, supporting the city numerous sieges, for what it turned into a strategic point of the first order, in a strong square protected by an important fortification abaluartada. In the course of the Peninsular Wars, during the French invasion it had great importance, it was a center of numerous military operations. |
