ADARVE
AND BARBACAN |

Adarve and barbacan were essential elements of medieval fortresses. The
adarve consisted of a path that ran through the entire fence walled by its
upper margin, at the height of the wings (even if they did not exist). It
allowed troops to move to those places, where they were necessary at every
moment of defense. The barbacan was a lower fence located to the outside
and below the main wall and that in addition to being the first defense,
prevented the attackers from laying up scales to access the top of the
wall. The alcazaba of Badajoz preserves these elements in full. |
