On the other hand Portugal incorporates the territory of Brazil into your territories and other territorial agreements are established overseas. There were not fulfilled this way the pretensions of France, which was claiming the annexation of a considerable part of the Portuguese territory. Napoleon tries to separate from the government Godoy and faces Carlos IV with the Prince of Asturias D. Fernando. This produces an internal conflict in the Government and the Royal Household, and is the moment of that the emperor takes advantage to invade Spain under the pretext of crossing your territory to conquer Portugal. |

The aim of this page is not to describe the development of this contest. There exist many pages that do it with the major authority and historical veracity. Only one tries to highlight the importance of Badajoz as strategic point between both peninsular nations. On the other hand, in the same web, there are pages that highlight the warlike facts very relevant.
Nevertheless the facts happened in these lands have been in certain way, ignored or forgotten, being had by our lands and your peoples, an important hanging debt. It is of waiting that the Bicentenary of this terrible contest, our authorities are capable of "re-placing" in the history, the events lived by our forbears and your generous and heroic contributions. Equally they try to gather those commemorative events related to this war, really peninsular, that are celebrated throughout the year 2008, so much nacional, since internationally and locally. Down below, links are included to interesting sites related by this topic. |

Last 11th, in the same place where On May 2, 1808 the people of Madrid, got up against the French invaders, a military stop took place where they paraded with your respective flags, representatives of the armed forces of five countries who fought in the War of the Independence. ------------------------------------ The National Commission created for the celebration of the Bicentenary of the War of Independence has celebrated your first meeting. Between other commissioners there appear representatives of six Autonomous Communities (¿?) and the Town halls of Madrid, Aranjuez, Cadiz and Bailén. The history is rewritten, at the moment with the same protagonists, the same heroes, and if perhaps, the the same " secondary actors ". --------------------------------------- The Foundation of the Historical Patrimony of Castile and León will promote across diverse actions(performances) the Historical Site(Place) of The Arapiles, close to the Salamancan municipality of the same name where on July 22, 1812... -------------------------------- We know that the Town hall of the Albuera celebrates successfully the annual commemoration of the great battle that was celebrated in the surrounding areas of that population. The recreation that there takes place, has acquired international reputation and there are always present representation the armies who in your fields fought in an absurd war, as absurd as all the wars of the world. ------------------------------- The Town hall of Badajoz glides to repatriate the remains of Manuel de Godoy, Prince of the Peace, to raise a mausoleum on the occasion of 150 Anniversary of your death. We wait that one also to the celebrations of 200 anniversary of the War of the Independence, returning (in it possible) your fortifications the place of honor that corresponds to him, as lot where so many men died, removed from theirs, defending your flags and the interests of your politicians. ------------------------------------- Don Benito's Town halls and Medellin prepare to celebrate the Bicentenary of the battle of Medellin, one of the bloody mas of the War of the Independence, where the Spanish army was defeated by the Napoleonic troops, causing the contest a high number of mortal victims for both decrees.
