Emérita Augusta, capital of ancient Lusitania, was born at the express desire of Emperor Augustus in 25 BC, as a resting place for soldiers of the V and X Legions, occupied the geographical and political center of a wide peninsular area and became one of the main metropolis of Roman Hispania.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Visigoths conquered it, and upon it, reusing spaces and materials, built another sumptuous city that also shone for its splendor and magnificence. Centuries later, after the Muslims took the city, Merida was razed and her public and religious buildings disappeared. The Arabs greatly strengthened it, adding Albarranas towers that built on Roman bases. For all this, the urban enclosure is a first class archaeological field, due to the remains of overlapping civilizations, which the foundations of the city jealously guard.

Today Merida is a mosaic of cultures and civilizations and at the same time a prosperous and quiet city, which deserves a specific website that shows the world, the splendor of its past and the reality of its present, as the capital of the Autonomous Region of Extremadura. In these modest pages are collected some of the monuments that can best represent it.
