The eventful life that followed along Merida's history, caused each of the civilizations that came to the city razed repeatedly. Reusing old materials or not, raised according to their traditions many public buildings (civil military or religious) people who gave a transcendent imports in the Iberian Peninsula. With the Muslim rule, initially retained its strong strategic position, but after the foundation of Badajoz, political power was gradually transferred to the newly founded city.

Merida is a living museum, where continually emerge from its underground, signs of ancient civilizations. Currently, among other qualities, is an archaeological field first entity, where experts continuously monitor the buildings, which make possible the recovery of hidden treasures that are put in value and perfectly contextualized to the primitive city.
