It was after the conquest of Badajoz by Alfonso IX of León, the first Cathedral of the city. As was customary at the time, it rose above the old mosque that for its private use had the emir of the city. The Christian temple soon became small and it was decided to build a new one, in the Campo de San Juan, more in line with the category of the city. |
Little remains of the primitive construction that the Marwans built. From its mine there are few remains, sausages in two overlapping towers of Christian era. Excavations a few years ago proved to be the oldest Islamic dating temple in the West. Shortly the day after, in the subsoil of the mosque of Cordoba, the remains of another building were discovered one year older. Only a few remnants of the mihrab support this theory. Also near these vestiges, there have been indications of what may have been the Throne Room of the Aftásidas kings.

After the conquest of Badajoz the building was Christianized, the great amyoria of its elements and its original structure was reused. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Castillo, as it was also called, remained in service until the consecration of the new cathedral under the advocation of St. John the Baptist in 1276. At that time the new See was not yet completed, and the works continued until the sixteenth century, although its current appearance was xonyned in the eighteenth century. The construction of the Military Hospital destroyed one of its side naves and finished ruining the building in general, losing its functions, characteristics and its structural and decorative elements. Recently, religious-themed mural paintings have been recovered in the Gospel Chapel and Mudejar decorations in what was its main chapel. |

Regardless of the archaeological remains that this site houses inside, around the plazuela of Ibn Marwans are located two important institutions, which with their presence and the services they provide to the city, deserve to be highlighted. These are the Bibliotece General de Extremadura and the Faculty of Biblioteconomy and Audiovisual Communication of the University of Extremadura. Two temples of knowledge, the first of which has extraordinary documentary and cultural backgrounds. The second is dedicated to the training of our youth in modern audiovisual media.
