elvas

As an ancient galleon with its white sails unfurled in the wind, the city seems to be guarding the other side of the Guadiana. Not for nothing, Elvas was always the key that best kept Portugal's freedom and independence throughout its history.

He belongs to Portugal from July 8, 1226, the day on which the Portuguese monarch D. Sancho II, after numerous previous attempts, takes it definitively for his crown. Her border ingessing nature provided her with a random life, being subjected to numerous sieges and starring numerous war episodes that led her to confront the armies of Castile, embodied in the nearby city of Badajoz.

ELVAS MEDIEVAL CITY

FORTIFICATION BASTIONED

ELVAS TODAY

Like very few cities, Elvas has managed to perfectly combine tradition and its glorious past, preserving almost entirely the monuments inherited from its past (medieval walls, cathedral, castle, abaluartada fortification (badly called Vauban), without to renounce progress, changes and evolutions of ways of living. The intramural population has been harmoniously modernized, living with the new buildings outside the world resulting from a necessary and respectful expansion. Today in united Europe, the ties between this beautiful town and nearby Badajoz, have been further strengthened and the exchange of common relations, experiences and experiences have achieved, that Portuguese and Spanish, we feel much closer than ever in all of our History.
