THE DOORS OF THE ARABIC FORTRESS OF BADAJOZ |

DOOR OF THE CAPITELBuilt by the Almohads, it has always been considered the main access of the enclosure, since it communicated the fortress and its primitive citadel, with the expansion area where the population was preferably expanded. The Old Town of Badajoz still preserves much of the urban fabric drawn by the Arabs. This door replaced an earlier one of direct access, which opened in the vicinity, flanked by towers. The Almohads built it as a double door in a bend, with a cremenated inner courtyard. The double extrerior arch is horseshoe, built with granite voussoirs inserted in an alfiz of the same material. The inner part was modified to half a point and built in brick. The double interior arch, also horseshoe, is composed of voussoirs that alternate granite with brick. The whole complex is waiting for rehabilitation works and is currently quite degraded. The entire enclosure of the door was surrounded by a barbican today partly disappeared, on whose remains were built in the sixteenth century the primitive Town Hall and a beautiful Renaissance door with monumental semicircular arch and triangular pediment. |
